Welcome to Indigolightworks....

Lit or unlit, these candle jars and electric lamps bring beauty and serenity into your home, creating a relaxed, intimate atmosphere or, when grouped, a sense of festivity.  Entirely hand made of high-fire, high-quality porcelain, these fine vessels provide gentle, romantic lighting and cast unique patterns on tabletops, walls and ceilings--wherever their light falls.  Lit with a simple tea light or other self-contained candle, the light reflects  on the interior porcelain walls of the vessel then spills out, casting a  lace like pattern of light.  This adds pleasing shapes and colours to your environment that are classically beautiful, enhancing the look of your home's wood, marble and other surfaces. These are quite sturdy pieces.  Classified as covered burning devices, if left unattended they are much safer than a naked candle.  Dishwasher safe, they can be used with confidence when entertaining outdoors on the patio and  by the spa, or indoors from the kitchen to the bedroom.  They will maintain their value for generations.

The making process:

My production runs are small as the making of the items is exclusively hand work and labour-intensive. The lamps or luminaries will vary in size and shape.  The cutwork on each piece is unique.

After being hand wedged, the clay for the piece is thrown on a potters wheel to create the basic form.  A matching lid to the vessel is also thrown. I incise gentle wave patterns over the surface with a variety of hand tools in thejJapanese hakame style.  Once the clay dries to  leather-hard consistency, I cut and shape the holes in a rythmic pattern. Each hole is then cut twice more, once to open up the inside to throw a more  intense light pattern and again on the outside to provide an extra decorative effect.  Inspiration for the shapes originated with classical Eastern forms, for example the handwarmers of nobles in the ancient Japanese court .The cutwork is wholly of my own design, patterened after the natural flora of the North American West. The lamps shown here are most popular as wedding and anniversary gifts. The examples shown here have a clear glaze to set off the soft ivory color of native American porcelain.

I also create lamps using ash-based glazes in several colours.  Photos of these works and prices are available via email upon request at  info@indigolightworks.com
